Virtual! Free Blacks in the North Carolina Underground Railroad
Before Levi and Catharine Coffin moved to Newport, Indiana (now known as Fountain City), they were part of an anti-slavery Quaker community known as New Garden in central North Carolina. Levi outlined details in his autobiography of his early experience with the Underground Railroad, which included working with freed and enslaved Blacks. Join North Carolina historian Dr. Adrienne Israel for a presentation about the history of the area and the importance of free Blacks aiding freedom-seekers out of slavery in North Carolina, including some who found safety right here in Indiana. Registration required by 5 p.m. on Feb. 14. Ages 18+.
