Levi & Catharine Coffin
Historic Newport Walking Tour
The community of Newport, Indiana, now known as Fountain City, was well–known in the decades before the Civil War as a place for those seeking freedom from slavery. Levi and Catharine Coffin were instrumental in providing support to freedom–seekers. But there were others who helped the Quaker couple to hide freedom–seekers and move them north. On this walking tour, we’ll discover the sites to understand how Newport worked together as part of the Underground Railroad.
