Join John Kaufman-McGivigan of the Frederick Douglass Papers of Indiana University Indianapolis for a community reading and discussion of one of Douglass’ most powerful speeches, What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July? Given on July 5, 1852, at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Douglass used the opportunity to point out the current state of injustice. Participants will read excerpts of Douglass’ speech out loud. Then explore and discuss Douglass’ views on the nation’s founders and how blacks at the time did not see it as a day worthy of celebration.
