Spend Columbus Day at the Indiana State Museum

INDIANAPOLIS — In search of something to do with the kids this Columbus Day? Join the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites for School’s Out! Columbus Day and enjoy a day of activities and performances.
Grab a passport and journey to our Explorer Central stations throughout the Great Hall. Learn what it was like to be an early explorer in Indiana by packing for your expedition, hunting for food and discovering new species. Enjoy an engaging performance about explorer Thomas Say, who went on several expeditions and documented many species. He later moved to Indiana and wrote a book that earned him the title, “The Father of Entomology.”

Explorer Central activities: all day
So You Want to be an Explorer?: Learn about the different types of tools explorers used to figure out where they were located, and how they took notes to document their expeditions.
Cave exploration: Dig through small containers to find puzzle pieces of different Ice Age animals.
Hunting station: Test your aim while “hunting” for food on your expedition. Using rubber band guns, shoot at pictures of animals that would be found in Indiana.
Native American Encounter: Learn about the different tribes that called Indiana home, and where in the state each tribe lived.
Discover a New Species: Check out different specimens found in Indiana, and learn about their environments.
