‘On This Day in History’ ideas from ‘Indiana in 200 Objects’ exhibit at Indiana State Museum

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Museum is honoring Indiana as part of its statewide bicentennial celebration with Indiana in 200 Objects, an exhibition on view now through January 29, 2017. The exhibit features 200 superb artifacts, including rare and priceless objects and documents.
To assist the media with ideas for bicentennial coverage, below is a list of exhibit objects with connections to the months September, October, November and December. To request photos of objects to run with story placements, please email [email protected].
• September 21, 1910 – Interurban crash (On view: Purse belonging to Minnie Pyrl Sayler, circa 1910 – she was killed in the crash).
• September 30, 1955 – James Dean dies (On view: James Dean’s black leather jacket, circa 1955)
• October – World Series:
o On view: All-American Girl Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) South Bend Blue Sox uniform worn by Helen Filarski (Steffes), 1948-1950;
o Kenesaw Mountain Landis plaque from the National Baseball Hall of Fame, 1946, and
o Tommy John’s New York Yankees jersey, 1989.
• October 1, 1956 – Albert Von Tilzer dies (On view: sheet music for “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” music by Albert Von Tilzer, 1908).
• October 6, 1981 – photograph The Last Smile is taken (On view: The Last Smile by Bill Foley, October 6, 1981).
• October 7, 1951 – John Mellencamp is born (On view: John Mellencamp’s concert-worn jacket from a concert at Market Square Arena, 1985).
• October 15, 1964 – Cole Porter dies (On view: “You’re the Top” engraved garter gifted to Cole Porter by his wife Linda for the opening night of his Broadway musical, Anything Goes, November 1934).
• November 5, 1879 – Will Hays is born (On view: The Hays Code, from the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, Inc. (MPPDA), 1930).
• November 11, 1922 – Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is born (On view: first edition copy of “Slaughterhouse-Five, or the Children’s Crusade,” 1969).
• November 12, 1880 – “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ” is published (On view: first edition copy of “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ,” 1880).
• November 14, 1868 – Frank Dudley is born (On view: painting, The New Blowout by Frank Dudley, 1935-1945).
• November 15, 1932 – USS Indianapolis is commissioned (On view: Kapok life jacket, signed by survivors of the USS Indianapolis (CA-35), circa 1940s).
• November 20, 1866 – Kenesaw Mountain Landis is born (2016 is his 150th birthday) (On view: Kenesaw Mountain Landis plaque from the National Baseball Hall of Fame, 1946) – he dies November 25, 1944.
• November 21, 1934 – Cole Porter musical Anything Goes debuts on Broadway (On view: “You’re the Top” engraved garter gifted to Cole Porter by his wife Linda for the opening night of his Broadway musical, Anything Goes, November 1934).
• December 6, 1924 – Gene Stratton-Porter dies (On view: Hand-colored book plate made by Gene Stratton-Porter for “Moths of the Limberlost,” circa 1912).
• December 11 – Indiana statehood (On view: Indiana State Constitution, 1851).
• December 17, 1975 – Noble Sissle dies (On view: “I’m Just Wild About Harry” from Shuffle Along, lyrics by Noble Sissle, 1921).
• December 19, 1944 – War bond purchased (On view: Unites States Treasury War Bond certificate, 1944).
