GENEVA, Ind. – The public is invited to the Limberlost State Historic Site Visitor Center on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m. for Swift Night Out, a free, family-friendly event, all about the chimney swift bird. These small birds are known for their aerial acrobatics and distinctive “chippering” sound.

“Chimney swifts are fascinating birds that are important for the number of insects they eat,” said Nicky Ball, Limberlost State Historic Site manager. “They are definitely unknown and underappreciated by most people.”

A program will be presented in the Limberlost Visitor Center classroom at 7:30 p.m., followed by a “swift sit” in downtown Geneva to watch the birds in flight. As the sun goes down, visitors will watch the swifts take shelter for the night in the chimneys of Geneva residents. Unlike other birds, chimney swifts are unable to perch upright and can only cling to vertical surfaces.

Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs for this free nature program. Donations are encouraged.

Limberlost State Historic Site in Adams County and the Loblolly Marsh Wetland Preserve in Jay County are located near Geneva in northeastern Indiana. Part of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, Limberlost admission is free for Indiana State Museum & Historic Site members. General admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for children. The Historic Site is located at 200 E. 6th St. in Geneva, Ind., just off U.S. Highway 27.
