Lanier Mansion offers summer camp for ages 8 to 13

MADISON, Ind. — The Lanier Mansion State Historic Site will host Moving and Making at the Mansion Art Camp July 13 through 15. The 3-day immersive camp, targeted children ages 8 through 13, is scheduled daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is now open and can be done by contacting Anne Fairchild, program manager at 812.273.4531 or [email protected].

“This camp is about expanding ideas about creativity, art from recycled objects and having old-fashioned summer fun,” said Gerry Reilly, Lanier Mansion State Historic Site manager. “Kids will have a blast by unplugging with art and activities in the great outdoors like hula-hoop races, tug-of-war, 4-square, parlor games, making 3-D art masterpieces, finger-puppet theater and discovering secrets to making odd paint patterns.”

Campers will learn secrets to recycling trash into treasures, 1850s comic animation, clever paint tricks to make fancy designs and kite making and flying. Campers will also make an authentic Greek-style vase, play fun low-tech games, have a tie-dye water balloon fight and swim at Crystal Beach.

Camp registration is $50 per child or $40 per child for families registering more than one. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged by July 9. Financial assistance is available through Jane’s Kids Scholarships.

The program will take place rain or shine with inside appropriate activities in the event of bad weather.
