Indiana State Museum to celebrate 10 years of speed

INDIANAPOLIS — Join the Indiana State Museum for Pinewood Derby® as we celebrate 10 years of speed. The annual program will take place Tuesday, March 28, through Sunday, April 2, in collaboration with Crossroads of America Council, Boy Scouts of America.
Fun runs take place Tuesday, March 28, through Friday, March 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 2, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The official race will be on Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All participating cars must be registered by 1 p.m. on race day. Participants ages 5 to 16 must register as a youth. Those ages 17 and older must register as an adult.
“Scouts learn that a Pinewood Derby® is more than shaping a block of wood, adding plastic wheels and affixing metal axles,” said Patrick Sterrett, Scout Executive, Crossroads of America Council, Boy Scouts of America. “A true Pinewood Derby® experience is complete with the use of physics, aerodynamics, and the science behind speed. By incorporating STEM, Scouts are challenging one another to make competitive cars while having fun.”
On race day, participants may enter a Pinewood Derby® car by 2 p.m. in the museum’s Best in Show competition. Cars will be awarded based on visual design. Categories include: movies, Indiana sports, science, architecture, camp, restaurant and most creative.
Life Scout Robbie Bruner will be on site on race day to collect donated cars for his Eagle Scout Service Project, the Riley 500, a Pinewood Derby® race that is set to take place at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health on Saturday, May 16.
“I chose to make the Riley 500 my Eagle Project because it is unique and different from most Eagle Projects,” said Bruner. “I am creating an experience that promotes Scouting and gives the kids at Riley an opportunity to have fun and learn what it means to be a Boy Scout.”
In addition, on race day, Indiana State University and the Scott College of Business will present Science of Speed, Crossroads of America Council will present STEM Scouts, Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be present with their BATAK Pro, a reaction testing game, and the Pacers Fan Van will be on site from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Pinewood Derby® is included with museum admission. An admission price of $5 per person for all Scouts and their families is being offered.
