Historic Site to host final ‘Festival of Flowers PaintOut’

NASHVILLE, Ind. — The public is invited to the final Festival of Flowers PaintOut at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site in Brown County on Saturday, May 20, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The “en plein air” (in open air) art competition is coming to a close after 18 years.
“We’re sorry to see it end,” said Cate Whetzel, T.C. Steele State Historic Site program developer. “With the restoration of Selma’s gardens, we’re excited to try new and different programming at the site.”
The Festival of Flowers PaintOut is open to professional, emerging and beginning artists, with child and teen categories for younger participants.
The festival will feature artists painting on the site grounds from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Artists participating must have their blank canvases or pages stamped prior to beginning their work. Judging will begin at 2 p.m. and the festival concludes at 4 p.m.
Adult categories include oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media and drawing. Children 12 and under and teens may enter any media. The first place winners and the people’s choice winners will be displayed at the Brown County Art Gallery in downtown Nashville.
An early bird registration will be available with a discount offered through April 30; adults register for $10, children and teens for $5. Rates for May 1 through 20 are $15 for adults, $10 for kids and teens.
At 2 p.m., a historic marker dedication ceremony will take place in the Formal Garden. Indiana University Bloomington historian Dr. James Capshew will speak. Incoming Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites President and CEO Cathy Ferree will also speak.
The new marker, brought to the historic site by the Friends of T.C. Steele, is an updated version of the marker which previously stood at the bottom of T.C. Steele Road.
Brozinni Pizzeria of Nashville, Ind. will be on site at 11:30 a.m. and beer will be available from Sun King Brewery of Indianapolis.
There will be a $3 parking fee for the general public.
