EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The public is invited to attend a Solar Eclipse Viewing Party on Monday, Aug. 21 from noon to 2 p.m. at Angel Mounds State Historic Site.

According to the NASA Total Solar Eclipse Interactive Map, Angel Mounds State Historic Site will be at 98.99 percent obscuration, which is the fraction of the sun’s area covered by the moon. The site will remain open through the duration of the solar eclipse. There will also be eclipse-themed activities for guests to enjoy.

“We’re very excited to share this rare occurrence with the public at a place where the sun and moon were very important to those who originally inhabited the site,” said Mike Linderman, Angel Mounds State Historic Site manager. “A total eclipse of the sun would have been an enormous event in their lives.”

Demonstrations include a Moon Crater Experiment where visitors will learn how moon craters are created by throwing marbles into moon sand and an activity featuring Solar System Geography where visitors will create their own solar eclipse model and learn why the United States will not witness another total solar eclipse until 2024.

Admission is $5 per person and proper eyewear will be provided. T-shirts to commemorate the event will also be available for $15 each.
