Angel Mounds to host ‘Native American School Days’

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The public is invited to attend Native American School Days Tuesday, Sept. 20 through Friday, Sept. 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Angel Mounds State Historic Site.
With more than 2,000 school aged-children, educators and chaperones scheduled to attend, Native American Schools Days will introduce students and visitors to the lifeways of those who lived at Angel Mounds as well as cultures of historic and contemporary Native Americans.
During this time-honored event, visitors will experience Native American singing and dancing, experience first-hand ancient skills such as atlatl spear-throwing and will have an opportunity to visit the recreated village in the Angel Mounds Interpretive Center. Through dynamic activities and personal encounters, visitors will learn about Indiana’s rich history and its first people.
“I feel a deep connection to my culture and heritage while providing a calmness that I enjoy,” said Todd Mahooty, an enrolled member of Taos Pueblo. “The detailed educational programming that surrounds Native American School Days gives all who attend an insight to that culture and history while providing a hands on approach to educating our community in regards to Native Americans. My hope is more people and businesses in our community will consider helping us fund and provide educational programming at Angel Mounds.”
The program will feature demonstrations, presentations, entertainment and education from Echo’tah Cherokee, Lipan Apache and Anishina’abe. Programming will range from flute making to storytelling—time honored traditions among Native American culture.
“Native American School Days is one of our most popular programs of which we have a waiting list for this year,” said Mike Linderman, Angel Mounds State Historic Site manager. “We are thankful and excited our educators appreciate the opportunity to expose their students to something as wonderful as Native American history, archaeology and how Angel Mounds fits into their community.”
The program is included in site admission.
