EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Angel Mounds State Historic Site is in the midst of its public appeal for 2016. Gifts received will directly benefit Angel Mounds State Historic Site to help ensure annual initiatives continue.

In 2016, Angel Mounds welcomed more than 70,000 visitors to the site. School children, guided tours, tourists from across the world, scholars and members visit Angel Mounds to experience first-hand the beauty and history the site provides. Since the Indiana State Museum Historic Sites began offering free school field trips to K-12 Indiana school children, Angel Mounds has welcomed 3,347 kids through their doors

In addition to the free school field trips, Angel Mounds hosted 2,500 school-age children during our annual Native American School Days program. Students were mesmerized by the beauty of Native singing and dancing, were able to experience ancient skills like spear throwing and flint-knapping and took a tour of the site. These activities provided teachable moments and connections to Indiana’s history.

In May of 2017, Angel Mounds will  host another popular educational program, Archaeology C.S.I. (Cultural Scene Investigation). Community programming, such as Farm Fest, kicks off the planting season with a weekend full of demonstrations, crafts and a variety of traditional farming activities. Native American Days, making a comeback in fall 2017, will bring the history of Angel Mounds to life, celebrating the indigenous people who settled at Angel Mounds nearly 1,000 years ago.

While we are proud and honored to share the important Indiana story of this once-thriving Native American cultural epicenter, these educational and community programs carry a significant expense to operate. We depend on the generosity of donors, members and friends to make all of this possible.
