The math of hanging a picture
When the Indiana State Museum presents an art exhibit, staff members often comment not only about the pictures but the symmetry with which they’re hung.
In the current exhibit Indiana Waterways: The Art of Conservation, on display through Dec. 11, Exhibit Preparator Ron Kellen and Arts & Culture Collections Manager Meredith McGovern were able to hang 60 pictures – 30 on each wall of the Thomas A. King Bridge Gallery – in a way that gave visitors the best possible view of each work.
We wanted to know how they do what they do, so we asked: How do you hang an exhibit?
In this video, Kellen explains the secret of hanging pictures to maximize the viewing experience.
