Visitors to Whitewater Canal State Historic Site can tour a grist mill, ride a horse-drawn boat and shop. Special activities take place throughout the year.
Special Events
Metamora Old Time Music Festival
Sept. 4; 9 a.m. – 11 p.m.

The Metamora Historical Society presents a weekend of live music and musical workshops. Enjoy the beautiful sounds of a mountain dulcimer, fiddle, guitar, hammered dulcimer, banjo, dobro, Irish harp and more. The Whitewater Canal State Historic Site will operate the Ben Franklin III Canal Boat and the Metamora Grist Mill during normal operating hours.
Twilight Time Again!
Sept. 18; dinner: 5 – 7 p.m.; cruises: 7:15 and 8 p.m.; wine and cheese tasting: 7 –10 p.m.
$35 per person
Guests will enjoy dinner catered by the Hearthstone Restaurant then ride a horse-drawn carriage to the boat dock to take a twilight cruise on the Ben Franklin III canal boat. On board they will listen to Blue Grass band Baggy Bottom Boys. After the cruise, guests will walk to the park for music by John Kogge and the Lonesome Strangers, taste wines from Chateau Pomije Winery of Guilford, Ind., taste cheeses from the Amish Cheese Shop of Metamora and taste chocolates from Mr. Fudge’s Confectionary Shop and the Old Fashioned Candy Store. Participants may also play lawn games in the park. 42nd Annual Canal Days
Oct. 1 – 3; 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
One of Indiana's most popular festivals! You'll find hundreds of vendors including antiques, artists, crafts and collectibles all along the Whitewater canal and throughout the entire village of Metamora. Spooky Halloween Cruises
Oct. 16 and 23; 7:30, 8 and 8:30 p.m.
$4 per person
The Ben Franklin III will be hauntingly decorated for night cruises and staff will be dressed in costumes for the occasion. A professional storyteller will spin frightening yarns to keep you on the edge of your seats during the cruise and some candy after.
Towpath 10K Dash and Fun Run
May 21, 2011; race begins at 8 a.m.
$25 per person
Registration continues through May 19, 2011
Runners and walkers will dash past beautiful historic buildings, a working 1845 grist mill, a replica of a freight-type canal boat powered by two Belgian draft horses, a world-famous 1848 aqueduct which is a listed Civil Engineering Historic Site, and an original working lock on the canal.
